HEY
MR. D.J.
The Kid is working a shitty type of job with no future and has
a racist white female boss. She still bitches about the OJ trial
openly. He has two Black buddies that work with him there, the
Joker and Mr. Cool. It is spring in Phx and getting hotter each
day. The Kid is totally frustrated with his job and voices that
he wishes that he could win the lotto and straighten out things
for Black folkes.
They go over the Kid's house after work to watch a sports event.
On the News and in commericials Blacks are buffoons, criminals,
sex-crazed, ignorant, lazy. This image bothers the Kid. Tells crew
of conversation with an Asian woman who thought that what she saw
on the news is what we are all about. He joins a Black history
program that teaches self pride and the importance of a relationship
with the One True God. A Rik Rankins type crime happens(suspected
shoplifter/bad check writer is ho
tied and killed during the arrest) and the white guy walks free.
Wishes he can get the truth out about our history and organize
the people of today so that their voices are heard.
Next day, during an extremely bad day at work, The Kid checks his
lottery numbers at lunchtime, WINNER. Everyone excited Makes vow
not to become a winner who just spends his millions on trips to
Europe and hairdos. Wants the cash to help his people. Tells the
ex-boss to get bent.
Act II
Brainstorming session leads to many ideas, the one they decide on is to buy a
radio station. Current Black station plays only love songs and songs with no
meaning. The Kid's station is launched commercial free and dedicated to the people.
Only songs
that have meaning and songs that teach positive living are the only songs to
be played here. Bob Marley, Public Enemy, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Tosh, Santana and
and Ice Cube are some of the featured artists. Ratings are high. Gets people
involved in their community by sponsoring clean-ups, pyramid building, literacy
help, job fairs, Black holiday(Kwanzaa, MLK, Juneteenth etc),drug rehab, anti-gang
divisions. Wants local atheltes and to help with fundraisers but team owners
tell him if they do they will be fired or traded.
Working with the anti-gang unit is a ex-gang member much like Edward Mallet.
Involved in shoot out that made his car explode and burned his body bad. He lost
both legs, recieved facial scars and lost several fingers. Must wear detachable
artificial legs. He works with the radiostaion and police to deter kids from
gangs now, does tearful testimonies that are emotional.
The Kid is very funny and a natural as a Deejay. As he spins, the city grooves
in the sizzling Phx heat. No commercials, no pressure from sponsors. Tries to
do all dj work by himself or close friends. Getting more famous and more outspoken.
Gets major
death threats. Small fire bomb hits the headquarters. Stops taking calls and
builds a mobile dj facility, takes it to the streets, goes guerilla style.
Rudy Buchcannan type case happens. Drunk guy with knife told to drop it, gets
shot 88 times by Phx PD, brings large protest march started by station. Makes
mayor promise to investigate issue on camera. Mayor feels humiliated.
Politicians don't like The Kid-- he increases political awarenss. Cops don't
like The Kid-- critical of abuse and wants civilian review board with minority
access and police chief fired. Other radio stations, especially the Black love
song station, are jealous
of the market share and attention. Rednecks hate the 'one tribe' philosophy and
Afrocentric facts which are broadcast with the music.
Hottest day of the year. Edward Mallet stopped by police, they brutalize him.
Put him in choke hold and kill him after his legs are disconnected and put on
the police car roof. Police claim self defense, and are cleared.
The Kid is very sad, feels responsible, demands justice. Intensive media blitz
to reopen investigation and prosecute the bad cops done by the Kid.
A huge, shiny black, Pyramid is erected in the Phoenix ghetto by it's citizens
and others tired of the anti-Black justice system. The people love him.
Black love song radio station manager sets up the Kid to be ambushed. Bad cops
and rednecks beat him up badly.
The Kid wants to go away, enjoy his $$, fuck em all. Edward Mallett's daughter
talks to him, he is re-energized. Sets up mobile broadcast in a place that pisses
off the rednecks and cops but they can't do anything to him, yet. He holds out
several days and then one night the rednecks and bad cops turn off cameras/electricity
and make a move to go in and wipe him out. They dress like Black gang members,
face paint too(Boston Tea Partyish).
The Black atheletes and Black cops show up at the last minute and fight the rednecks
and hold them of til cameras back on. Their identities are known and Black cops
who volunteer to help the Kid arrest them.
The Police Chief resigns and the mayor is defeated in the election. All investigations
are reopened and the civilian review board finds all cops involved guilty, victims
get large settlements.
The Kid's show goes national and and becomes a major force. Juneteenth concert
is performed and the Kid is the Emcee for the day. Famous acts perform. Mallet's
daughter says that she will be a Deejay when she grows up, the Kid smiles.
