MARY
SHELLEY’S
AMERICAN NIGHTMARE
GENRE : Horror
COMPARISON : Stephen King meets Alex Haley
BLURB : How the idea of Frankenstein was REALLY born.
LOGLINE : Legendary British author and mother of the Horror genre,
Mary Shelley, comes to America as a teen and her unforgettably,
terrifying experience, becomes the basis for her classic novel,
'Frankenstein'.
Synopses : A fictional piece about legendary British Author, Mary
Shelley and a weekend in America that prompted her to write her
classic novel, 'Frankenstein'.
The Mary Shelley portrayed is one kick-ass, little teenager who
has a clear sense of right and wrong. She comes to America on the
Fourth of July on the invite of Thomas Jefferson himself. She is
very idealistic and seduced by the sweet message of freedom that
she has read in the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights
and other writings of the revolution's leaders. Her utopian view
is shattered when she gets to see the true brutality, hypocrisy
and twisted ugliness of American slavery, first hand.
This story unfolds, parallel to the events in the classic book.
The central theme of man trying to 'play God', is given new meaning
in this context.
Rather than Dr. Frankenstein, we have Dr. Franklin (bastard son
of Ben Franklin). To make her experience more terrifying, the body
parts of her own man-servant AND FRIEND, who traveled with her
from England (Adamly), are used to help create the monster that
the 'evil Dr. Victor Franklin' has brought back to life. The new
monster has many of the same experiences as the classic monster,
but is shown amid the insanity of the plantation system. At first
Mary is shocked and devastated, but in the end, she has the last
word and teaches the mad doctor a lesson about the danger of playing
God.
